Understanding Anna Lari

Anna Lari is one of our favourite companies. A family business, and lovely people (see the picture at the foot of this post), based near Brescia, they make their lights themselves, very well, and they have a uniquely useful collection. It is also distinctive! I pointed out recently that most brands buy in designs from many sources so they tend not to have a memorable "family" feel. Whereas if you mention an Anna Lari-type light, everybody will know what you mean! That's not completely true, actually, because they have a variety of unusual, quirky and efficient designs in their collection, but their core style is this:

Within this style, they have a very wide range of sizes, finishes and shade materials, so they can be appropriate to almost any interior. What is more, they have a substantial cordless collection, that includes floor-standing reading lights and those Tinins. Click here for their cordless catalogue.

That core design is extremely useful. It is slim, both at the foot and the shade, so it fits into small spaces. Different designs cater for different needs. Here is a swing-arm version, Sue-Ambra,

of which there are also table and floor versions.

So let's zip through the options for one design, Ambra.

The table, which comes as standard in a choice of five heights:

Note that the heads tilt, so that the light can shine where you want it.

The floor, in three heights:

The wall:

and even a pendant:

There are twenty (20!) metal finish options, for Ambra and most of the rest of the collection!

(I know that those are too small to see properly. Don't worry, though—they are very clear on the product pages of the web site.)

The metal shades are in the same finishes. Julia has a metal shade that is semi-translucent:

Shades can be covered in leather:

You have fourteen leathers to choose from:

And there are are sixteen parchment and polycarbonate shade options:

These collections work in a wide variety of interiors. Here is Tina in Frankfurt airport, her flat-sided shades clad in leather:

With their narrow bases and shades, they can fit onto mantlepieces, and they also make excellent bedside lights: they take up very little space on the bedside table; they are tall enough to cast light onto a book; and the shade prevents glare getting into the eyes of the nocturnal reader:

Of course, their small, orientable wall lights work just as well. This is a leather-clad Tinin:

They can be very formal:

The cordless lights are also ideal for dining (again, light is cast where it is needed, with no glare).

I hope this has given you a good idea of how useful Anna Lari's collection is. What you can't see is how high the quality is, and how good they are to deal with!

Click here for their web site and here for their most recent catalogue. Do please look at them, particularly for other designs in their diverse and unusual collection. See the playful cordless lights for children (of any age!), for example.
